Does Artificial Grass Flatten Over Time?

22/05/2023

If used frequently or there’s always a heavy load on the lawn, artificial grass can get flat after a few years. To make them stand and “fluffy” again, you can brush or rake up the grass fibres. If this doesn’t work, you can ask a professional to do the maintenance (or know if your artificial grass now requires an upgrade or replacement).

Does artificial grass stay flat?

Although synthetic turf is made of durable materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene and nylon, over time they can still accumulate damages or get flat because of frequent physical contact. Although the synthetic grass fibres are designed to be upright, they can still be made to “lie down” because of the frequent forces that exceed their resistance.

In other words, artificial turf is still vulnerable despite its excellent resistance against frequent heavy use and harsh environmental conditions. Still, it provides great value because they can last for 10 to 20 years, given proper care and timely maintenance. Also, there will be long-term savings on water and fertilisers.

Does artificial grass need to be maintained?

Although artificial grass is made of durable and long-lasting materials, they still require proper care and timely maintenance. This is important not just for prolonging the turf’s lifetime and keeping the grass fibres upright, but also for the safety of all the users.

First, about safety, the entire turf surface should be regularly cleaned and inspected. Carefully watch out for sharp objects that might cause wounds and injuries. Also remove the leaves and debris that might have fallen off to your synthetic turf. Although these might seem harmless, they can still affect the safety levels and visibility of the surface (e.g. a sharp object might have become hidden beneath the dead leaves and other debris).

When it comes to making your artificial grass last long and stay upright, it’s also important to carry out close inspections once a month if possible. Also watch out for uneven or unusually bulgy surfaces that can cause tripping and other accidents. Note again here that timely inspection and maintenance can actually improve safety in the area.
