How Flammable is Synthetic Grass?

21/04/2020

In this tragic Summer of extreme bushfires, we have been getting asked the question “how flammable is synthetic grass?” Are we safe from open fires with synthetic grass?”

Many people are concerned about safety when investing in synthetic grass, and whether it is flammable or fire-resistant. Luckily, synthetic grass is completely safe to use and isn’t flammable. However, there are some things you need to be aware of.

Can artificial grass catch fire?
Absolutely not. Most synthetic grass is made from high-quality, non-toxic, non-flammable synthetic fibres. They won’t catch fire and burn. In the situation of an open fire or extreme heat, artificial grass blades will melt. By melting, it creates a barrier that prevents the flames from spreading. Melting damages, the outer appearance of the grass but fire can be totally avoided.

You should take precautions to ensure that anything hot should be kept away from your synthetic grass as possible. Keep these things away from your artificial turf:

  • Cigarettes
  • Barbecues
  • Fireworks
  • Fire pits
  • Motorised machinery like hedge trimmers

Take precautionary measures to protect the artificial grass from coming in contact with these things.

To be on the safe side, if you install a permanent barbecue or fire pit, ensure that your barbecue is raised above the grass and placed on slabs.
Construct a buffer of brick, concrete or other landscape material between the barbecue and your synthetic turf. That way sparks from hot coals will not damage your turf. Our technicians at GRASS RUBBER PLAY can advise you regarding the right separation space.

If you’re using portable gas or charcoal grill, set it away from your grass. Doing this will prevent hot grease splatters or hot food from landing on your artificial grass and damaging a spot.

Discarded cigarettes will not cause fire and spread but they will leave a burn mark on the spot. Fortunately, if some sections of your synthetic grass have melted, we can repair it.

How can you prevent synthetic grass from melting?
Sometimes even reflective windows, reflective panels, and mirrors can cause your synthetic turf to melt due to the sunlight reflecting from these surfaces. It’s important to address these things before laying your turf.

Only synthetic grass with sand infill is tested to be fireproof. Filling your synthetic turf with sand will not only keep your lawn looking good, but it will act as an extinguisher to the fire. As long as your turf is installed with sand-based infill you are safe. The sand infill will prevent the fire from spreading and make the turf fireproof.

How can synthetic grass be fixed after fire damage?
If your artificial grass was damaged by a cigarette or barbecue, it can be repaired. The burnt section can be cut and replaced with new synthetic grass. However, you should be aware that it may not look exactly the same. Artificial grass comes in batches even when we are using the same type of grass it may not be identical depending on the time, we made the installation. Rest assured that the patched-in section will be visible at first but it will be less visible over time.

Our advice:
Don’t worry whether or not your synthetic grass will be flammable. Technically, it’s not flammable and safe. All good quality synthetic turf from reputable companies go through fire risk testing to make sure it’s 100% fire retardant. The sand infill will protect you more by preventing your grass from catching fire.
